Farewell, and thanks, Hazel.

In our last Roma Review, we reported that our Club President, Hazel Pudney, was unwell, and had moved into a care home.

True to her usual sense of humour, Hazel chose the very moment of publishing to depart from us, thereby robbing many club members of the chance to say a proper and heartfelt goodbye.

Hazel’s funeral took place on the 3rd of April at Milton Keynes, and we shared some lovely memories.

Hazel was a real `Norfolk Gal’ and worked on the Fakenham telephone exchange.
Derrick Pudney was on the local army camp, and looked after communications, working through the local GPO exchange. Thus their paths crossed, and the rest, as they say, is history, being married for over sixty years.

From Norfolk, to London, to a brand new home in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, where their family was raised. Hazel then went back to work, and progressed from a School cleaner, to Head Cook  (but not bottle washer!)

Hazel and Derrick took up camping as a way to provide their family with holidays, moving on to several motorcaravan/campers and ending up with one of the, then new, Honda Romahomes.

Hazel (with Derrick’s able assistance) became a real team leader in the formation, and early days of the Romaclub. Her work for the club, since its foundation, was so valued, she was awarded the title of Club President.     One club member summed her up for many of us :-

“full of fun, with a great enthusiasm for club life”.

Her clan of enthusiasts `Hazel’s Angels’, will miss her dearly, as will anyone who got to meet her, and share her sense of fun.

Brenda and I first met her in about 1986, when on our way back from a Cornish holiday; we called in on a Roma Rally at Sandford-on-Thames near Oxford. Hazel immediately made our family welcome, filling us with barbecued burgers and sausages. We shared many good times, even heading north to rally in Northumberland, where, heading back from Berwick-on-Tweed, we were waved down by the Pudneys, to share strawberries and cream in a lay-by overlooking the North Sea.

Derrick and his family received many tributes, most of them thanking Hazel for the `good memories’

To quote just one:-

“I wonder if she ever realised how much she altered the lives of so many people for the better, by her part in the foundation of the Romaclub.
We met people we would never have met, and with the rallies, went to places we had never heard of. She gave me support when I ran my first rally, so simple those days, and enabled me to run others, and to enjoy doing it……………………………”

Goodbye Hazel.
Thanks for helping to form this club, all you did for members, and for all those happy memories.
Allan..
